Heart of Appalachia Region

Experience the Heart of Appalachia and its rich history and cultural expression, while lodging at a locally owned and run bed and breakfast. Abingdon, Virginia is home of the Barter Theatre, while Wytheville boasts the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner theatre. A veritable treasure trove of wilderness activities and recreation, the Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia is a place where Americans can make connections with their abundant heritage.

Follow the route of past explorers like Daniel Boone through the oldest mountains in America, or visit one of the many living history museums that display what life was like for American pioneers at the beginning of the nation’s history.

There is a movement to commemorate the rich textures of sound that originated in Virginia through “The Crooked Road” project. Events, jam sessions and performances will be taking place all over the Heart of Appalachia, recounting the evolution of bluegrass and traditional country music. It is a great way to take in some local flavor.
